The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set Saturday, June 20, 2026, for the conduct of bye-elections in six states across Nigeria to fill vacant legislative positions.

The announcement was made in the commission’s Thursday bulletin, following a brief ceremony at its headquarters in Abuja, where the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, also formally received a newly sworn-in National Commissioner, Rear Admiral Jamila Malafa (retd).

INEC disclosed that the bye-elections will take place alongside the Ekiti State governorship election already scheduled for the same date, ensuring a synchronized electoral exercise.

The affected positions include senatorial seats in Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers, and Ondo states. In addition, a State House of Assembly seat in Kebbi State and a House of Representatives seat in Kano State will be contested.

During the ceremony, Prof. Amupitan described Rear Admiral Malafa as an accomplished professional with extensive experience in both military service and electoral administration.

He expressed confidence that her appointment would further strengthen the commission’s ability to deliver credible and transparent elections nationwide.

The upcoming elections are expected to restore representation in the affected constituencies and reinforce confidence in the country’s democratic process.
